‘Life in Ethiopia is very different to the life here in Australia. African food wasn’t really popular within Australia so it was difficult to break into the market where so few actually knew of the Ethiopian cuisine,’ Tesfaye Tefera- Founder of Made in Africa. There’s something about sharing a meal with people that you love that just warms your heart. Intentionally taking the time out of our very busy lives to eat a meal with others creates time and space for relationships to flourish. Sharing food with someone is telling them that you trust them, and that you genuinely like them. This building of relationships is essential to the Ethiopian cuisine where communal dining is at the heart of the community. Foregoing cutlery, Ethiopian cuisine uses injera – a spongey pancake-like bread – as means for picking up portions of meat, curries and vegetables. With its rich, spicy stews and diversity of flavours accompanied with the unique communal style of eating, Ethiopian dining is an experience you can’t miss out on! The Ethiopian community in Brisbane, while small in comparison to Melbourne and Sydney, is growing and thanks to Tesfaye, his family and the team at Made in Africa you can have a truly authentic Ethiopian dining experience right here in Brisbane. We got to chat to Tesfaye Tefera, the founder of Made in Africa and hear a little bit about his story. Made in Africa blossomed out of Tesfaye’s desire to help his people and support them through trade and spread awareness of the Ethiopian culture. Tesfaye established Made in Africa in 2007 and has dedicated a lot of hard work into creating a small idea into a viable business. He is currently studying business part-time at the Queensland University of Technology so he can further develop Made in Africa. He has a lot of determination and successfully juggles university, supporting his family and running the restaurant. It's now nine years since the inception of Made in Africa and Tesfaye has plans to expand the online presence of the restaurant in the near future which will further bring the Ethiopian culture and cuisine to those living in Brisbane.
